Wolf SG-4
A Tribute to Michael Shanks
and his character, Daniel Jackson
The Music Video

News of this music video has spread across the Internet like wildfire but here's the background behind it.

The video was made by Mel and Chris Buckley the night before the SG4 convention began. They gave it to Bryan - the man in charge at Wolf Events - after the Cocktail Party on Friday night on the off-chance that it may get played sometime during the weekend.

It was played - during the judging at the Fancy Dress Party the following night. All of the guests were in the hall along with the majority of the convention attendees. At that time, Michael had not seen Meridian, the episode in which he leaves the show. When the video began, everyone's attention was on it, and the reaction could be felt in the hall. There were some cheers at favourite parts and there were many tears around the hall.

At the end of the video, everyone gave Michael Shanks a long standing ovation, during which the man on the microphone announced "Ladies and Gentleman, Michael Shanks." It was clear that Michael, Amanda and Lexa were all very moved by the video from the beginning. Amanda, Lexa and Tom joined the standing ovation and Michael raised his glass in acknowledgement before standing up and calling everyone "rat bastards", which lightened the mood considerably. He went on to say, "I promised myself I wasn't going to cry" and then asked, "who was responsible for that?" at which point, everyone except Mel and Chris sat down (couldn't have been better timed if it was planned!) Michael thanked them sincerely before Fancy Dress Party duties continued.

The following is an extract from an interview that took place just after SG4.
Despite suffering from a bad cold, he's just attended a convention and was genuinely touched by the fan reaction to his appearance there. Indeed when a montage of Daniel's final moments on the show were screened, there apparently wasn't a dry eye in the house - including his own. He came to the microphone and told the attendees they were 'rat-bastards for making me cry!'.

"Yeah, that caught me off-guard," the actor admits. "Someone stuck in a dedication video after I'd had a couple of glasses of wine. It was all set to Celtic music, which is always stirring. I was fighting it really hard, but they got me! It was really nice. I've only done a couple of conventions, but I wanted to thank the fans for their support."

~ Extract from article Action Jackson - Impact #124, April 2002

For the record, Mel and Chris have assured me (many times) that they had no intention of causing Michael Shanks or anyone else to cry!

The video is a beautiful tribute to Michael Shanks and his portayal of Daniel Jackson. It contains many clips from Meridian, as well as clips of Daniel from throughout the five seasons of Stargate SG-1. The song is "What if..." by Kate Winslet and the video ends with "Daniel - we'll miss you. Michael - thanks for 5 great years." At the moment, the video is not widely available but Mel and Chris have given me their permission to make it available for download from here.

The video is approximately 6MB. It is in Quicktime format and you will need the latest version of Quicktime to view it - available from www.quicktime.com. Also, please be aware that the demand for this video is expected to be quite high. It is available from two different servers so if one doesn't work, please try the other. If neither of the links work then please be patient and drop me an email (webmaster@michael-shanks.com) to let me know. I am online pretty much every day at some point or other and will try to resolve problems asap.

Disclaimer: This video is the property of Mel and Chris Buckley. Please do not reproduce it or make it publicly available without prior permission. The song belongs to Kate Winslet and her record company, and the video clips are the property of MGM/UA and Gekko Productions. All rights are reserved. No copyright infringement is intended.

Please note: this video is NOT officially linked with Wolf Events. It was simply first shown at the Wolf SG4 convention. Wolfevents was not in any way involved in its production.

Right-click ONE of the links and choose "Save Target As". Both files are identical and should start downloading after a short pause.
